The Champs were a group of children who had trouble pronouncing their "R" sounds. They appear in Double Down.
The group, which consisted of Greg Heffley and four other kids, were taught by Mrs. Pressey and met on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library. They were of high enough reputation that all the other kids would clear the way when they paraded around during recess. They also had a rivalry with the Language Lizards, a similar group that had trouble pronouncing their "S" sounds, that wasn't as popular as the Champs.
Greg and the other kids didn't pay attention in learning and goofed off. Greg's mother eventually got frustrated that he wasn't learning much of his R's, so she hired a tutor to help Greg. After a few months, he could say his R's with no problem, but Greg still wanted to stay at Champs, so he faked not being able to pronounce them. This lasted until when he slipped up and said three R's right in front of everyone, causing him to become a social pariah and an outcast. He said that even the Language Lizards wanted nothing to do with him. He still has a few rivalries as a result of this.
