Wanna See My "Secret Freckle"?
Fregley to Greg Heffley

Fregley (known as Fregly in the online book) is a peculiar student at Larry Mack Junior Middle School, known for his eccentric and often disgusting behaviors. As Greg's schoolmate and neighbor, Fregley has made numerous appearances throughout the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, occasionally ending up hanging out with Greg, much to Greg's chagrin.

In the live-action Diary of a Wimpy Kid films, Fregley is played by Grayson Russell and was voiced by Christian Convery the 2021 animated film adaptation.

History

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Greg introduces Fregley to readers as an infamous kid at school, known for his bizarre and disgusting behavior. One such instance is when Fregley asks Greg if he wants to see his "secret freckle" in the front yard, showcasing his peculiar and off-putting nature.

In addition to being Greg's classmate in Phys Ed, Fregley has his own made-up language. While the students have figured out his language, the teachers are still unaware of its existence.[1]

Diary of a Wimpy Kid83.2

Despite Fregley's eccentricities, he surprises Greg by defeating him in wrestling during Phys Ed class. Greg's lack of attention during the teacher's instruction leads to daily defeats.[2] Greg realizes the only way to move out of Fregley's weight class is to gain weight, though his first attempt fails to move him up when he stuffed his clothes with socks and shirts, even intimidating Fregley during their match.[3]

Fregley was one of the few people to be fooled by Greg's gauze cast and shows concern for him only to be turned away.[4]

Fregley's note

When Rowley starts hanging out with Collin Lee, Greg tries to demonstrate that he, too, has a friend by inviting himself to a sleepover with Fregley though he was unsure of his decision once he sees Fregley stabbing a kite with a stick. However, the sleepover turns into a disaster as Fregley consumes Greg's jelly beans and behaves erratically, eventually driving Greg to frustration. Soon, Fregley's hyperactivity escalates to the extent that he ends up chasing Greg with a booger on his finger, forcing him to lock himself in the bathroom. At around 11:30, Fregley slips a note under the door, apologizing to Greg who ends up touching the booger and fainted out. Ultimately, Greg sneaks out the house when he woke up to the sound of Fregley snoring.[5]

The Last Straw

While Greg is going up to Rowley's house to dig a hole Fregley in his front yard asks if his scab smells funny which he ignores. When Greg goes towards Holly Hills to talk to her, he came running in between them shouting out "Boogie! Boogie! Boogie!". Greg then blames and gets angry at him for ruining his moment to meet Holly. At a rollerskating rink while Greg scoots towards Holly to ask her to skate with him, she mistakes him for Fregley.

Dog Days

Greg mentions that he is glad that Susan didn't invite Fregley to the Reading Is Fun Club because he was acting stranger than usual. Greg starts to think he's dangerous but is relieved that he doesn't leave his front yard during the summer which he believes is because his parents installed an electrical fence.[6]

After Susan notice that her son's been lonely since his fight with Rowley, she invites Fregley over for a playdate that came to a shock to Greg when he opened the door, thinking it was Rowley coming over to apologize. He refused to play with him and slammed the door shut however Fregley was still here when Greg looked out the window after a few minutes.

Dog Days84

Greg tries to call 911 but Susan stopped him and revealed that she invited him over for a playdate. Greg compares Fregley to a vampire because they can't come inside your house unless you invite him in. Greg now found something that scares him more than The Muddy Hand. Susan asks Greg why he isn't going outside and play with Fregley which Greg claims that he might be "naked" as Fregley peeks behind a tree and says "woo! woo!"[7]

In Susan's photo album Fregley can be seen peeking behind a tree; the caption says Greg playing hide 'n' seek with a summer "pal."[8]

The Ugly Truth

After Greg loses his friend Rowley, he looks for a new friend but they all have something he doesn't like. Greg then mentions Fregley as the only kid his age without any friends but he ruled him out on being a friend material long ago. Greg says he once used the sewer manhole to get in and go to Rowley's house without being disturbed by Fregley. At the Lock-In, Greg excused himself to go to the bathroom where he sees Fregley playing by himself in the ball pit.

Cabin Fever

Greg said Fregley won Student of The Week, with him thinking that it was for not biting anyone for a week straight.

The Third Wheel

In this book, Fregley plays a minor role, Greg only mentions that he was paired up with Ruby Bird (a girl who has a bad habit of biting people) for the Ballroom Dancing unit. Ruby Bird bit Fregley, according to Greg's Relationship Chart. At the end of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel book, There is a valentine poem.

Hard Luck

After Greg lost Rowley once again, he thought of morphing Fregley to be the friend he wants. So at lunch, Greg invited Fregley over to sit with him. Greg started to explain how things work. Right in the middle of telling Fregley about the five second rule, Fregley went for the potato chip in Greg's hand. After Greg explained that you had to drop it he took the potato chip out of his mouth. After school, Greg told Fregley he needed to scout ahead for dog poop and carry his roller bag. When the mingo kids started chasing them Fregley threw Greg's books thinking they would stop and read them. When Greg calls him to go to school the next day, he comes dressed in an odd way and Greg helps him dress. Then at school Greg dressed him like the manner he did and got to the table with girls and tried to make them laugh but failed and asks him to show a trick. Fregley strips down to his underwear and takes a chewing gum and put it in his belly button and chews it, and said he would make a bubble with it but failed and landed near the girls. The girls screamed and got scared, while the boys became interested in seeing what else he can chew. He was voted most popular in the yearbook, due to his ability to chew things with his belly button. While Greg was taking Fregley's picture, Fregley was able to blow a bubble with his belly button.

The Meltdown

Greg mentions that going to Rowley's house is a pain because he has to pass by Fregley's house, and 9 out of 10 times he's in his front yard. In the picture, Fregley is standing in his front yard saying to Greg "betcha I can find your 'tickle spot'!". He also appeared later in the book in his front yard again, with snow around him making it look like he's a snowman with his own head for the head sticking out, saying "Wanna finish building me?". He may or may not have participated in The Battle of Surrey Street.

Wrecking Ball

Fregley makes a brief appearance when he is seen eating the lawn fertilizer that Frank bought.[9]

Personality

Fregley is very bright for his age, but he tends to be weird and disgusting. Most people find his habits strange and off putting to the point where even mean kids like Patty Farrell are completely terrified of him. In the first film, Greg revealed that he is sent home for hygiene issues at least once a month though it is unknown why. He is always hanging out in his front yard alone doing a wide range of disturbing activities, such as talking to Greg about repulsive topics: his secret freckle and talking about his scab and saying "I bet you can fit your foot in my mouth" are examples.

In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, it is revealed that he has his own secret language. For example, he shouts "Juice, juice!" when he needs to use the boys' bathroom; teachers view this literally and often end up giving him juice out of frustration, since they don’t understand the language unlike Greg and the other students in the class. He also has a crush on Ruby Bird, a girl who has a habit of biting people. In his page in the Do-It-Yourself book, he goes to a counselor who called him "unpredictable and dangerous". On the same page, it is shown he thinks that a little squirrel can talk back to him using its mind. These weird and disgusting questions, it gives a hint of how he thinks and it also explains his unacceptable behavior.

Fregley is obviously friendless who often seems desperate for companionship. In the first book, Greg only pretends to be friends with him just to make Rowley jealous, only for the plan to backfire horribly after Fregley blindly took the bait and chased him with a booger when he got hype with sugar after eating Greg's jellybeans. In Dog Days, Greg's mother tried to organize a play date with Greg and Fregley, much to Greg's horror and Fregley's excitement. In Hard Luck, his ability to chew food with his belly button wins him the respect of many students, leading to him being voted "Most Popular" in the school yearbook. In the films, Fregley is still unpopular, but has become a part of Greg’s friend group by the time of the Dog Days movie.

Appearance

In Greg's journals, Fregley is portrayed with specific physical characteristics, such as glasses, short and rounded hair, and a wide-open mouth displaying rounded teeth. He typically wears a black shirt and a scarf. Notably, Fregley is depicted with his mouth always wide open in the earlier entries, but in "Hard Luck," this changes, and he is shown closing his mouth occasionally.

In the film adaptation, Fregley undergoes a significant change in character. While his appearance remains quirky, the film emphasizes his unique fashion sense. He often wears unconventional clothing, which his mother creates using old clothes, reflecting his eccentric personality.

Trivia

  • Given estimates made based off of illustrations of him, Fregley is most likely between 4' 1" (124.46 cm) and 4' 3" (129.54 cm) tall. However, this is entirely conjecture, as his height has never been stated conclusively within the series.
  • Like Rowley, he is never depicted with his mouth closed in the online book. The only times he's drawn with a closed mouth was in Hard Luck while eating a chip, and in an animated segment in the film after he was eating Jell-O.
  • He might have a mental disability.
  • His name is spelled "Fregly" in the online version, but the books and movies spell it "Fregley".
  • In the original online version, Greg says that he and Fregley went to kindergarten together and that Fregley was home-schooled since the 1st-grade—however, despite being home schooled, Greg claims that Fregley's mom sometimes brings him to school for certain events so he can "mix and mingle" with the other students.
    • Also Greg says that he's heard Fregley's supposedly very intelligent, but he's a little skeptical of this.
  • Fregley isn't seen or mentioned in Rodrick Rules and he's also not seen or mentioned in any of the books between Hard Luck and The Meltdown. So far, Fregley has had a semi-major role in the first and eighth books of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and a minor role in the rest of the series.
  • His father has never been shown, though he does live with him, seeing as Greg suggested Fregley's parents had an electrical fence.
  • He has a game he possibly invented called Diaper Whip. It is probably a game where you throw a used diaper.
  • In one activity page, he asks the readers if they store food in their belly buttons "so they can have a snack later on". It is possible that he also does this, has done it once, or thought about doing it.
  • Fregley apparently has his own cell phone, since in the fifth book, Greg claims that he and Rowley were the only kids at their school's Lock-In to not have their own cellphones (and were the only kids left after the group of angry parents came to get their kids)
  • It is unknown if Ruby Bird ever dated Fregley.
  • Fregley, along with Rowley, are considered to have a cursed likeness when their mouths are closed.
  • Jeff Kinney said that he chose Fregley's name because he "thought [it] sounded like a kid who had freckles".
    • He also said that he created Fregley because he was supposed to be a strange kid. "I think most people have a kid like Fregley on their street, a kid that's a little strange, and if you don't know any kids that are like Fregley, then you might be Fregley."
  • In the Dog Days movie, his phone number is 555-4200.
  • Fregley wrote Gareth the Green Bean.
  • In the books, Greg disliked Fregley and saw him as strange and creepy. However, in the movies, he is actually good friends with Greg, Rowley, and Chirag Gupta.

Name Variants

  • Fregley's name can be spelled in two different ways. "Fregley" is the term used in the movies and books. Several sites, however, including the online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, use "Fregly". Some pages about Fregley tend to spell his name this way, and some fans have also called him, "Fergley". Despite this, since the book and film, term is mostly used and on websites and franchises also, hence the official term is "Fregley".
  • In the French translations of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Fregley's name is changed to Freddy. It is possible that's his real name.
  • In the German translation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and it's movie counterpart, Fregley's name was changed to Finley. However, this has been retconned, as later books and movies all call him Fregley.
