— Mr. Litch to Rodrick Heffley |
Mr. Litch (known as Mr. Keith in the online book) is a Rec League soccer coach who appears in The Last Straw. He is noted to be a drill sergeant-like character who likes to yell a lot. Greg Heffley, the main character, reveals that Mr. Litch previously served as Rodrick Heffley's soccer coach, and his coaching style significantly impacted Rodrick's interest in sports. In fact, Mr. Litch's approach played a major role in Rodrick's decision to no longer participate in sports activities.
In the online version of the books, Mr. Litch is the father of Kenny Keith.
History[]
The Last Straw[]
Greg is assigned Mr. Litch as his soccer coach, to whom he describes as the "worst one" out of the coaches. [1][2]
Mr. Litch customarily yells, "Get your butts over here!" when the Pre-Alpha Minus kids were slow getting on the field. He makes Greg run three extra laps during practice one day after he directing walks over to him with his butt facing him.[3]
In the next practice, Litch gives Greg the position of the "Shag" which gives Greg the responsibility of chasing the ball when it goes out of bounds.[4][5]
One day after practice when Mr. Litch is tasked with driving Greg, Kenny Keith, and Erick Bickford home, he is startled by Kenny, who blows the horn on his car as he talks with his assistant coach and made Greg looked like the one who caused it. After giving Greg a dirty look, he talks with the assistant coach for another half hour before driving them, doing five errands along the way.[6]
After Greg, Mackey Creavey, and Manuel Gonzales fail to block a free kick, Mr. Litch pulls them over and yells at them for it, though Greg thinks it is preferable to be hit by a soccer ball.[7][8]
When Greg becomes distracted while acting as the team's goalie and winds up costing the team a game, Mr. Litch can be seen in the background of a photo taken of the event.[9]
Class Clown[]
In the animated short, Mr. Litch appears at soccer practice. He tells Greg and some other kids to 'get their butts back on the field'. Greg walks towards him butt facing him. Mr. Litch then makes Greg do push-ups, which Greg does not manage to do, causing Mr. Litch to get annoyed.[10]
Online[]
The incident where Greg walks towards Mr. Keith with his butt facing towards him took place last year. [11] Later, he went inside a Home Depot while driving Greg and Kenny home.[12] When Greg and the benchers fails to block a fail kick that had to be saved by Ian, he took them out of the game and yells at them because that was the first time the ball went all the way down to the goalie.[13] Greg later got Mr. Keith to make him the backup goalie.[14]
Ian was eventually caught driving which caused an argument between all the coaches, leading Greg to the assumption that Mr. Keith brought in Ian be extra sure Red Socks wins the league. Mr. Keith replaces Ian with Greg despite Greg not having any experience out on the main field but Mr. Keith figured it didn't matter as the ball only had gone to their goal once.[15]
He is present when the team pelts Greg with orange peels for causing them to lose the playoffs.[16]
